It’s the big announcement! I’m starting a flower farm! This has been one of my worst kept secrets. The planning for this started in December and it has been something I have been too excited about to hide from many I talk to regularly. So, what are the details?
I will be growing flowers at Farm 57. If you not familiar with Farm 57, it is near the airport on the north side of Evansville. It is on Kansas Road, at the roundabout with Oak Hill Road, just off of Highway 57.
Why will I be growing flowers at the farm? I have not hid my love of using local flowers in my designs. You can read more about why I feel using local flowers is important here. This is something I have wanted to do for awhile and the time and location is right. I am anxious to connect with customers in a new way. I do not get to see many of the brides I work with again after their wedding. I look forward to building relationships with people who come to the farm.
The farm is just a few minutes from my house and they have a great infrastructure available. From a business standpoint, it makes sense. They are also fine with me growing slowly, which I plan to do.
This summer I will be starting with field grown annuals to test the waters. I need to see what customers are interested in buying and the amount of workload I will be able to take on. (I am not stopping my event business!) I want to offer unique varieties of flowers that are not available anywhere else locally. I will be planting favorites like zinnias, celosia, and sunflowers but these will not be the traditional types you are used to seeing!
I will have a greenhouse available to me to extend the season into the early spring and later into the fall in the future. I can imagine this space filled with anemone, ranunculus, and specialty tulips in the spring and with dahlias and heirloom mums in the fall!
To start, I will have pre-made bouquets available to purchase in the shop as well as a flower bar set up for anyone who wants to make their own bouquet. In the future I hope to offer a flower subscription package, classes, and more. The sky is the limit!
For those not familiar with Farm 57, it has a great shop with wonderful, interesting gifts. They also sell fresh produce during the summer in the shop and have annual flowers, herbs, and vegetables in their greenhouses for customers to buy for their own gardens. Houseplants, succulents in particular, are also in the shop. They are stocked with pumpkins in the fall and fresh cut Christmas trees in December. And now they will have cut flowers!
Many know Farm 57 as the home of Pizza Revolution. The food truck has hours at the farm and hosts the popular Wednesday night food truck nights from spring-fall. I hope to offer some special things on these Wednesday nights, as well.
I am so excited to be sharing flowers with you in this way!
I would love your feedback. What flowers would you like me to offer? What events would you like me to host? Please let me know! Thanks for following along.
